Social Studies: a much needed challenge
September 22, 2007, Sugar Land
Dear parents,
In this fall semester, Beestar has deployed Social Studies for
the third grade through fifth grade.
The programs were earnestly developed for enhancing students' knowledge and interests in
history, geography, culture, and economics.
They are especially useful in enforcing what kids learn in school and preparing
them for the state standardized tests, such as Texas TAKS, Virginia SOL, and California Standards Tests.
So far, Social Studies programs have been a challenge to Beestar students.
Even those top students who have been doing extraordinarily well in math and ELA
often need help in answering the questions.
It is time to balance the learning and put more efforts on Social Studies. Otherwise,
the lack of balanced skills may hinder a student's continuous learning in middle school.
Social Studies is one of the cornerstones in elementary education. It builds the foundation in history,
geography, economics, citizenship, culture, and research skills.
The content, as appropriate for each grade level, enables
students to understand the importance of our American heritage and our free enterprise society.
It teaches students to appreciate the basic democratic values and beliefs of our nation. It directs
the new generation to become responsible citizens and well-rounded leaders in the future.
From past to nowadays, a thorough understanding of
history, laws, economics, and our free enterprise system has made many of our leaders. Young students
need to master the fundamental knowledge to excel in the future.
To support the learning of Social Studies, parents are encouraged to use a variety of
material for their children, such as history books, biographies, and geographic programs/tools from library.
Valuable resources from museums, historical sites, presidential libraries, and state
preservation societies are very educational, too.
With the debut of Social Studies, we hope to send a message to parents:
Social Studies is just too important to be taken lightly.
Wish your child build a solid foundation early on his way to become a well-rounded responsible citizen.
Have a wonderful new semester!
Best wishes,
Beestar Team
